NHS or private dentistry, is it worth?

There is a cost difference in NHS and private, but that is not the only difference. A lot of these will probably surprise you.

At our clinic, we understand the limitations that often come with NHS dentistry, where the focus on seeing a high volume of patients can result in shorter, rushed appointments. This can leave little time for personal comfort, detailed conversations, or addressing your individual questions. We believe that your experience should be different, and we’ve worked to remove these challenges.

In an NHS setting, treatment quality can sometimes be compromised due to time constraints. For example, a 20-minute NHS root canal versus a 90-minute private root canal can yield very different results. That's why we offer extended appointment times, ensuring that each treatment is delivered with the utmost care and attention, without the pressure of time. We recognize that many of our patients feel nervous, and we make it a priority to provide a calm and comfortable environment—whether it's offering a hand to hold, providing a relaxing playlist, or simply taking the time to explain every step of your treatment. Here, you're never rushed. Why are NHS appointments so much shorter? The NHS funding issued to the practice is limited. They have a criteria of how many procedures and patients are seen and completed in a day to maintain their commitment to fulfill their funding requirements. If they don’t? The practice has to pay that money back, which of course no business wants to do. The solution? Seeing as many patients as they can as quickly as they can, not because they don’t care but because their hands are tied. They have an obligation and time is unfortunately a luxury.

Another significant difference is the quality of materials and labs used in your treatment. NHS funding for treatments is limited, which can mean that the best materials or labs may not be accessible, I say may when actually not at all. This can impact the overall quality of your care. At our clinic, we don’t operate within such restrictions. We use only the highest-quality materials and work with the best labs, ensuring that your treatments not only look great but last longer. We believe that by providing the best possible care with superior materials, we help you achieve better outcomes, so you need us less often in the future. Did you know mixed practices (a dental practice that offers mixed and private dental treatment) have composite for fillings etc and labs that are premium for private patients and often significantly cheaper labs and materials for NHS. So you now have a really rushed appointment with a lot poorer quality materials. It’s not sounding very attractive.

The outcome? Often complications from treatment or poor longevity, repeat treatment being required resulting in more cost. Also a less pleasant appointment each time. This is why often dentists get a bad bad! In reality if I said to you, you have to do a task to the best of your ability with less than half the time you required and the poorest materials, how perfect do you think it would be?
